May 12th 2009 - A Woman Who Wins
Lorraine Edey, LCSW, PhD, ACC
"I am opposed to millionaires, but it would be dangerous to offer me the position". ~Mark Twain
Several months ago I decided I wanted to get smarter about my money and a woman who wins wants to be smart about her money.
Barbara Stanny was conducting the perfect class. “Prince Charming Isn’t Coming” How Women Get Smart About Money.
Barbara says: “The Prince Charming syndrome is alive and well. It’s as rampant among the twenty-and thirtysomethings as it is with the baby boomers. Women know full well they should do something, but they still aren’t doing it. The recognition is there but the resistance is stronger. For example, in 2005, 93 percent of the women interviewed told pollsters from Oppenheimer Funds that saving for retirement was their primary investment goal. Yet 47 percent of those women had not contributed to their retirement plan and 55 percent said they were not very, or not at all, prepared for retirement”.
It was during this time that I realized that I was still after all these years waiting for my ‘Prince Charming’ to whisk me off into financial bliss. He would do for me what I could not and did not want to do for myself. If I was going to be a Woman Who Wins at the money game, then I had to begin to take totally responsibility for my money.
To be a Woman Who Wins you must:
• Feel fully empowered around money
• Understand how to make your money work
• Make a firm commitment to your job or business and stick to it
• Learn to speak money language
• Stretch into new ventures
• Think BIG
• Take extreme care of yourself in body, mind and spirit
• Analyze your spending pattern and put a plan into motion
• Move from Scare City to Wealth City
• Save regularly and
• Invest money wisely
My revelation was that I had to become my own Princess Charming. Using all the above tools I was able to move in a new and more exciting direction. Financial Freedom became my mantra. I felt a surge of power that I had never experience before. I claimed my right to manage my finances and the most amazing thing happened, my relationship with my husband began to change dramatically around money. The power struggle was over. I was now empowered and he appreciated this new confident woman that had emerged. He felt he now had an ally; we were a team that could now harness our strengths to become financially solvent.
The Oppenheimer Fund in 2008 states that “Women are marrying later in life, getting divorced more frequently and outliving their spouses by an average of seven years. As a result, nearly 90% of all women will end up managing their finances alone at some point in their lives”.
A Woman Who Wins know when she needs help and reaches out and creates the support she needs. As women we tend to take care of everyone else and neglect ourselves. Who’s available for you?
