What is Chiropractic?Doctors of chiropractic focus on the diagnosis of musculoskeletal and nervous system disorders. Chiropractic supports the concept that maintenance of proper function of the musculoskeletal and nervous system can provide for better health. Chiropractic care is holistic, meaning that the entire body and the person's lifestyle are examined and treated.
What education is required to practice chiropractic? Chiropractic graduates must have a minimum of six years of college education. This education means that Doctors of Chiropractic have expertise to diagnose, treat, and /or manage many different health problems. Because a Doctor of Chiropractic is considered a primary Health Care practitioner, in most cases, you can make an appointment without getting a referral from your medical doctor.
What is an adjustment?Chiropractic care is known (but not exclusively) for its use of an adjustment, sometimes called manipulation. An adjustment is a precise procedure in which the trained Doctor of Chiropractic exerts specific corrective pressure at specific places on your spine or other joints. When a thorough examination reveals joints that are not properly functioning, adjustments are applied to create motion into the joint. This helps improve alignment/mobility, relieve associated muscle and nerve tension, improve balance and assist healing.
What can I expect from treatment?Besides the adjustment, Doctors of Chiropractic may use other modalities such as electric muscle stimulation, ultrasound, moist heat, ice, massage, or others. The treatment you receive will be designed specifically for you and will be based on your symptoms and examination findings.
